Detroit-Style Pizza in 3 Easy Steps

detroit style pizza

As a registered dietitian, mom and business owner – the most frequently asked question I get is “What’s for dinner?” Tonight it’s Detroit-Style Pizza.

Yes ordering out pizza may be easier, but you can’t control the ingredients or how much sodium, calories and fat are in the pizza. And you definitely can at home. And you definitely don’t get this reaction from your husband when he walks into the house, “Wow, it smells like a pizzeria in here.” I will take that as a compliment.

Here are my top tips to making Detroit-Style Pizza as easy as 1, 2, 3.

  1. Make a quick pizza crust with plain, non-fat greek yogurt, self-rising flour and baking soda. It will be chewy and delicious!
  2. Use a cast iron skillet because it goes from stovetop to oven.
  3. While it’s baking for 12 minutes, put together a quick salad.

Detroit-Style Pizza

Jen Haugen
This recipe may seem backwards because the sauce goes on last, but I can assure you, this is the best way to make this recipe. You will need a cast iron skillet for this recipe because you start the crust cooking process on the stovetop and finish it in the oven.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Course Dinner
Servings 4

Equipment

  • 1 Cast Iron Skillet

Ingredients

5 Minute Pizza Dough

  • 1-1/2 cups self-rising flour
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup plain, non-fat greek yogurt

Pizza Ingredients

  • 1/2 tbsp canola oil
  • 1/2 tsp italian seasoning
  • 1 cup shredded muenster cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup turkey sausage crumbles (pre-cooked) or turkey pepperoni
  • 1/3 cup pizza sauce

Instructions

  • Mix pizza dough ingredients together in a bowl. Turn onto a floured surface and knead for 4 minutes.
  • Heat oven to 500 degrees. Brush a 12-inch cast iron skillet with canola oil. Roll out pizza dough into a 12-inch square and transfer to the skillet, pressing up the sides. Pierce dough with a fork. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning. Place skillet on stove-top and cook over high heat for 2-3 minutes until the dough slightly puffs.
  • Remove pan from heat and top with cheeses all the way to the edges of the crust. Add the sausage crumbles and remaining Italian seasoning. Dollop pizza sauce around the top of the pizza.
  • Bake pizza on bottom rack of oven for 12-15 minutes or until cheese is golden brown. Serve with additional warmed pizza sauce, if desired.

The Cast Iron Skillet Set I Use

If you have never used cast iron before, I have some tips for you to getting started and how to maintain your cast iron as well. The reason I love my cast iron skillets from Pampered Chef is because they come pre-seasoned, and ready to cook with right out of the box. They are easy to hold with handles on both sides and they go from stove to oven to grill to campfire too.
